NATIONAL top cueist Ahmad Taufiq Murni was crowned the champion of the Brunei Snooker Championship 2017 after defeating Teo Chee Soon 3-2 (53-16, 46-69, 63-32, 22-41, 71-12)  in the final on Sunday.

With the victory, Taufiq completed a double after winning the Brunei Cue Sports Association (BCSA) National 9-Ball Ranking Challenge Grand Final 2016 last month defeating Lim Wei Kok 13-3 in the final.

Taufiq started his campaign at the National Billiards and Snooker Hall of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium with a 2-0 win over Hj Shahrruzaman.

He then defeated Lim Young Wee 3-0 in the last-four to book final date with Teo.

Meanwhile, Teo on the other side of the bracket defeated Md Razi (2-0) and Mohd Hasrijam (3-0) to reach the final.

In an interview with BruSports yesterday, Taufiq said that he did not expect to win the tournament.

"I am a pool player and I didn't target anything for this tournament, so I didn’t expect to win as there are a number of good snooker players competing," said Taufiq.

"Snooker is different from pool, so what I did was just keep on potting and score points. I didn't expect to do well but I just want to keep playing in tournaments," he added.
