NATIONAL shuttler Jaspar Yu Woon Chai reached a new career high of 234 in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings last month.

The 28-year-old has set a personal target of moving up to a much higher position despite dropping two places in the latest weekly rankings.

“I've never paid too much attention to rankings. I think playing well is more important,” said Yu in an interview with BruSports recently.

“At the same time being in a strong ranking position does help in getting better draws sometimes,” he added.

“It also allows me to skip qualification rounds but it's great to achieve a new career high.

“Hopefully a few good results this year will put me in better rankings. I have already set a target in my mind. Let's see if I can achieve it by the end of the year,” continued the 2016 Rio Olympian.

Next on the calendar for Yu will be the 3rd Brunei National Games (SKBD) where he will be competing under Brunei-Muara.

He hopes that he will be able to put in his best contributions for his team

“April will be an important month for me to reach an acceptable peak,” said Yu.

“I’ll be looking to contribute my best for the team for SKBD. I hope my teammates are working hard towards winning the medal in SKBD too,” he concluded.

Yu has already competed in two tournaments so far this year with the Victor Far East Malaysia Masters 2017 in Sibu, Sarawak in January followed by the Princess Sirivannavari Thailand Masters 2017 in Bangkok last month.

He has also set his sights on two more in China next month.
