THE Brunei Darussalam Fencing Federation (BDFF) will have 23 fencers competing at this weekend’s Sabah Open Fencing Championships 2017 in Kota Kinabalu.

It is also the first time that the BDFF have sent competitors - from their Fencing Grassroot programme -  for the Under-10 and Under-12 categories.

BDFF secretary general Captain (U) Nashriq Moksin is delighted to have them for the tournament.

“It is good to see the young fencers from our Grassroot programme competing in this competition,” stated Nashriq in a press release.

“This will give them early competition exposure and hopefully will develop them to become better athletes/fencers in future regional and international competitions,” he added.

Nashriq also hope that they will be able to equal or better their one silver and one bronze medals haul from the 1st ASEAN University Fencing Championship last month in Malaysia.

Hjh Anis Sabrina Hj Yahya won the silver medal in the individual women’s foil event while Hardiwan Shah Rahim bagged the bronze in the individual men’s sabre event.

“Majority of the fencers are from the higher institutions team who competed at the ASEAN University Fencing Championship last month and we hope we can equal or get a better result,” concluded Nashriq.

The Under-10 and Under-12 categories will begin today while the open category will follow tomorrow.

More than 200 fencers are expected to contest in the tournament which is organised by the Sabah Fencing Association.
