THE national women’s hockey team returned home inspired and motivated from last week’s training camp in Malacca.

The training camp started with a series of match against a number of top hockey teams from the Malaysian state at the MBMB Taman Bandaraya Bukit Serindit.

The other programmes offered at the camp were designed turf training and as well as pre and post match video sessions to analyse matches.

The national women’s hockey team, also known as ‘Brunei Stingers’, closed the seven-day programme with Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) sanctioned friendly matches against Singapore where they lost both games with 9-0 scoreline.

“The players have improved technically and tactically from this camp and I am very pleased with their development even though this is the first time the team got together to train after few months,” the team’s caretaker coach Fauzi Hj Awang told BruSports yesterday.

“We have learned a lot in Malacca and the players were all motivated and we hope to continue what we have been taught in Brunei and try to improve on it.

“We played Singapore in friendly matches at the end of the training camp and lost in both matches…it was very tough as we didn’t get to prepare a lot for it.

“Singapore on the other hand have improved tremendously as they have been training and competing overseas for the past year…so we need to catch up fast," he added.

Asked on the Brunei Stingers chance on making it to the Southeast Asian Games this year the assistant coach said: “We are not sure about it…”

This year’s SEA Games in Malaysia will see a total of 38 sports competed. Five sports including two winter sports will be introduced to the Games: bridge, cricket, ice hockey, ice skating and Tarung Derajat.

It is also the first time that two winter sports were accepted by the South East Asian Games Federation (SEAGF) Council into the SEA Games. Ice skating and ice hockey, together with cricket, were inducted into the Games joining the other 35 sports which are featured in the Olympic Games and Asian Games.
