AHMAD Taufiq Murni put up a strong showing at the WPA (World Pool-Billiard Association) World China Open 9-Ball 2017 in Shanghai after making it into the top-32.

The 27-year-old started his campaign on Friday with a 9-5 victory over Kong Dejing.

He then edged World No 11 Dang Jing Hu 9-8 to progress into the knockout stage.

However, he was stopped in his tracks by World No 4 and reigning US Open champion Cheng Yu Hsuan 11-7 yesterday.

Taufiq had managed to reach the same stage back in 2011 where he fell 11-10 to Ronnie Alcano of the Philippines.

National cue sports coach Lim Tat Hwe is satisfied with Taufiq's performance.

"He did very well in this event but his knowledge of safety needs to be improved," said Lim yesterday when contacted.

"For that to happen, he needs more exposure and to compete in more international events such as Asian and World levels," he concluded.
