Good start for Brunei at 3rd Brunei Open Fencing Championship

BRUNEI got off to a strong start at the 3rd Brunei Open Fencing Championship 2018 winning one gold, two silver and four bronze medals.

Alina Ali (2nd R featured pic) won the country’s first gold medal after defeating her compatriot Amal N Mahzan in the final of the women's individual epee at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

The other silver medal came from Anaqi Asahrin after he fell to Wen Yi Wei of China in the final of the men's individual foil event.

Some 80 participants from China, Indonesia, Malaysia and hosts Brunei are currently vying for top honours at the January 9-14 championship.

The tournament continues tomorrow with women's individual foil and men's individual sabre events.

Junior categories (under-14 and under-8) exhibition matches will be held on Sunday to expose young fencers in a competitive atmosphere.

Organised by the Brunei Darussalam Fencing Federation, the tournament is supported by the Youth and Sports Department of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS).
