BRUNEI is set to contest in the newly announced Southeast Asia ESports Championship (SEA EC) 2021.

The inaugural competition will feature three game titles - PUBG Mobile, Valorant and League of Legends: Wild Rift - and the Sultanate will take part in all of them.

"The Southeast Asia Esports Championship is a good initiative by Vietnam, who is also the organising committee for the 31st SEA Games esports game title," said Zul'izzi Yahya, the vice-president of Esports Association of Brunei, on Thursday.

"This will allow our Brunei athletes to get the much needed experience and exposure in regional competitions to prepare for the Games next year.

"This competition will also further strengthen the relationship between all the esports federations in Southeast Asia to support each other," he added.

The Qualifiers are set to be held between November and December in their respective countries.

A total of 52 teams from all 10 eSports federations in Southeast Asia will progress to the USD 140,000 main event in January 2022.

The Vietnam Recreational and Esports Association (VIRESA) have partnered VNG Joint Stock Company to host the SEA EC 2021.

The tournament is also a good warmup with Vietnam hosting the 31st SEA Games next year.

"Two out of the three games at this year's Championship are medal events at the 31st SEA Games," said Do Viet Hung, VIRESA general secretary.

"Therefore SEA EC 2021 is not only the first championship of a major annual event in Southeast Asia but also an opportunity for eSports athletes to practice before the 31st SEA Games," he added.
