Karate: Kuwait team lend Brunei a helping hand

THE national karate team were handed a timely boost ahead of the 32nd SEA Games to train with the visiting Kuwait team over three days.

The Kuwaiti contingent included Abdullah Shaaban, a two-time Asian Kumite champion, and the kata team made up of twins Mohamed and Salman Al Mosawi and Suzuki Mohammed.

The trio had most recently won gold at the World Karate League competition in Canada.

The Brunei team managed to take in six intensive training sessions - twice per day from Tuesday till Thursday.

According to Brunei's assistant Karate and conditioning coach Baharshatri Rashid, a friendly sparring session was held between the kumite athletes.

The training session culminated with local kata athletes given an opportunity to showcase what they have learnt throughout the three days.

Brunei to be represented by 12 karatekas in Cambodia

Farhah Syahirah Mohd Shamrin will contest in the women's Individual Kata event.

She will then team up with Rodhyatul Adwanna Bakar and Farhana Najeeha Abd Rahman in the women's team Kata event.

Over in the men's category, Awg Muhd Nazirul Hj Johar will compete in the individual Kata event.

He is then joined by Khairul Shafiq Khairul Arifin and Ak Ahmad Munib Aiman Pg Hj Hasimudin for the team event.

On the other hand, Md Izzuddin Irfan Md Faizal will see action in the men's Individual Kumite 84+kg.

The trio of Muhd Sufizan Mohd Sofian (-75kg), Muhd Danial bin Dahlan (-60kg) and Muhd Harith bin Danial (-55kg) will contest in their respective weight classes.

Mohd Farhan Japar Sani and Muhd Adam Nawawie Mohd Ishak are the other two athletes as they combine with the trio for the team Kumite event.

They will be accompanied by coaches Haji Okhida Simangasing (Kumite) and Anggoro Bayu Pratama (Kata).
