SEA Games: National karate team bag two bronze medals

THE Brunei karate team secured two podium finishes for two bronze medals in the kumite events at the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand.

Contested at the Multi-Purpose Space on the 2nd Floor of the Ratthaprasasanphakdi Building, Government Complex, Chaeng Watthana, Ak Ahmad Munib Aiman Pg Hj Md Hasimudin crushed Sengdaovong Thatsaphone of Laos 8-0 to move into the semi-finals of the men's kumite -55kg on Friday.

He was then stopped in his tracks by eventual gold medallist Kaliana Sundram Thevendran of Malaysia 11-2 to take the joint-bronze with Thailand's Chanphet Setthaphong.

On the other hand, Muhammad Harith Dahlan was edged 4-3 by John Christian Lachica of the Philippines in the semi-finals of the -60kg event dropping him to Repechage A.

He then took care of business with a 6-0 victory over Chantavixay Anothai of Laos to bag the bronze.

Over in the kata events on Thursday, the men's team fell 23.1 - 21.7 against Malaysia.

The team comprising Farhin 'Idlan Mohamad Shamrin, Muhammad Iqbal Asnan and Muhd Syahmi Zafran Bakar dropped to the Repechage and missed out on the bronze after losing 23.2 – 22.3 against Vietnam.

Meanwhile, it was a disappointing end for the women's team as they were disqualified in their opener against Malaysia.
