Wushu team bag 4 golds to cap historic ASG

BRUNEI produced their best ever showing to date at the 14th ASEAN School Games (ASG) after a haul of four gold, four silver and 10 bronze medals.

It is the first time that Brunei has managed to finish at the top of the podium more than once at the Games.

The country's sole gold medal previously was courtesy of pencak silat athlete Anisah Najihah Abdullah at the 2015 ASG, which was also hosted by Brunei, when she clinched the girls' tunggal event.

This year the Brunei wushu team finished at the top of the podium four times at the UBD Sports Complex on Thursday.

The first gold was won by Lim Wan Xin in the girls' 1st International Routine nanquan + nandao event with her score of 18.266 points.

Agni Agstine Dimonim of Indonesia took the runner-up spot on 18.172 followed by Malaysia's Sharene Kiu with 18.083 points.

Abel Lim Wee Yuan bagged the boys' 1st International Routine nanquan + nangun event with his score of 18.320 points.

Indonesia's Mikael Nugroho Wibisono took second place with 18.289 points while Singapore's Lee Ze Yu completed the podium with 18.146 points.

Gwen Lee Yen Xi bagged the Sultanate's third gold after winning the girls' Chuji nanquan + nandao event after tallying 17.519 points.

Indonesia's Felicity Paramita Budiyono and Vivienne Ventura of the Philippines followed with 17.479 and with 17.413 respectively.

The other gold medal was courtesy of Meagan Marie Keasberry.

She tallied 17.593 points in the girls' 24 Form taijiquan + 32 Form taijijian event to place top of the podium.

Second place went to Hannah Ysabel de Los Reyes of the Philippines with 17.463 while Malaysia's Ng Yu Xuan took the bronze with 17.456.

The trio of Lauren Emily Chua Yu Qing (girls’ International Routine-42 Form taijiquan + 42 Form taijijian), Hailey Tse Tow (girls' Chuji changquan + jianshu) and Samuel Ong Yong Jun (boys' 24 Form taijiquan + 32 Form taijijian) managed bronze in their respective events.

Brunei's other medals from two other sports.

The pencak silat team claimed four silver and six bronze medals while badminton delivered the other bronze from the boys' team event.

Indonesia are the biggest winners of the Nov 20-28 Games with their haul of 42 gold, 30 silver and 21 bronze medals.

Thailand follow in second with 20 gold, 24 silver and 26 bronze while Malaysia round off the top three with 14 gold, 16 silver and 27 bronze.
