NATIONAL weightlifter Mohammad Nashrul Hj Abu Bakar lifted his way to a sixth-place finish in the men's 65kg category at the 23rd Commonwealth Games on Sunday.
He managed a combined total of 253kg - 110kg for snatch and a new national record for clean & jerk with 143kg – at the SEC Armadillo in Glasgow, Scotland.
The result replicates his historic feat four years ago when he became the first Bruneian weightlifter to qualify for the Games at Birmingham, England.
His personal best remains at 255kg which he produced at the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand back in December.
Nashrul is pleased with the results and is hopeful to make a third straight appearance at the Games.
"I couldn't be any prouder to be here at my second Commonwealth Games, and especially, totalling sixth place for two consecutive Games isn't a bad place to be," said Nashrul in an interview with BruSports News.
"It is just a reminder that I still have a lot of work to do and I will always have more work to do.
"Hopefully I get to be here again in four years’ time," he concluded.
Malaysia's Muhamad Aznil Bidin completed a golden hat-trick with his total of 299kg in the field of 10 participants.
Raja Muthupandi of India claimed the silver with 286kg and Morea Baru of Papua New Guinea completed the podium with his lift of 282kg.
