WINRUN TYRES started their campaign in Group B of the GRÂND Women Open Basketball Tournament with a 68-53 victory over MyTown Eating House last night.
Izzah Sandoval was the biggest factor notching a game-high of 31 points for Winrun Tyres.
Michaela Norris added 16 points while Mel Sotelo chipped in 12 points in the victory at the BBA court in Batu Bersurat.
On the other side, Wardah Me’raj topscored for MyTown with 14points while the duo of Lim Giuk Ting and Nurfarhana Yvonne Abdullah poured in 13 and 10 points respectively in a losing effort.
It was an evenly contested opening period with neither able to pull away to see the scores deadlocked at 15-15 going into the second quarter.
MyTown did well to force turnovers off their opponents but were unable to convert their chances.
It was Winrun Tyres who created a bit of breathing room after Sandoval, who notched 10 her teams’ 14 points in the frame, hit a buzzer beating jumper to put her side up 29-24 at halftime.
Winrun Tyres opened up a double digit lead after starting the second half with a 6-0 run.
MyTown replied with five unanswered points but they simply had no answer to defending Sandoval, who put her side up 42-39 midway through the frame with a three-pointer.
Winrun Tyres only used four players while on offence with Sandoval doing the damage, leaving a player behind on defence to ensure MyTown don’t score on the break.
It worked out for them as they stayed ahead 50-38 going into the final quarter.
MyTown were unable to cut the deficit and trailed by as many as 16 points before a buzzer beating layup by Norris completed the triumph for Winrun Tyres.
Over in the veteran tournament, Fitness Zone beat Linktech 93-72 in Group B.
The competition will resume tomorrow with Indera En Voy Transportation taking on SSB Honey Carsmart A in Group A of the women’s tournament at 7pm.
TK Tea House Restaurant B will do battle with Hawks in Group B of the veteran tournament at 8.30pm.
