Bruneian swimmers make splash in Miri

IT was a medal rush for our Bruneian swimmers at the 22nd Miri Age Group Swimming Competition 2023 over the weekend.

Sharmeen Md Mharvin and Matthias Jordan Narcis were the biggest winners after bagging the best swimmer award in their respective age groups.

Sharmeen, competing under the banner of Brunei Speed Swimming Club, swept all her events in the girls 13-14 years old category with eight gold medals.

She also managed to set two new age group records in the backstroke events at the Naim Clubhouse.

The 13-year-old completed the 100m with a time of 1:14.22 and clocking 34.10s in the 50m event.

The other events which she finished at the top of the podium are the 50m (38.28s), 100m (1:22.65) & 200m breaststroke (3:07.53), 200m IM (2:44.42), 50m freestyle (29.75s) and 50m butterfly (33.48s).

On the other hand, Narcis clinched the best boy award in the 9-10 years old category after taking home six gold and three bronze medals.

Competing under the Hammerhead Swimming Club, the 10-year-old swam to seven new personal bests.

He started off with three gold medals in the 100m freestyle (1:16.09), 200m IM (3:18.44) and 100m butterfly (1:32.53) on Saturday.

His other three gold medals came from the 50m butterfly (39.94s), 50m (35.12s) and 200m freestyle (2:48.03) events.

He took the second runner-up spot in the 50m breaststroke, 50m and 100m backstroke events.
