Golden Girls tame Minimau for opening win

GOLDEN GIRLS overpowered Minimau 58-27 in the opener of the Propel Women's Cup on Saturday night.

Tong Sing Ching led the way for Golden Girls with a game-high of 22 points.

Chris Tan, the oldest player on the roster at 63 years old, added 13 points.

Yvonne Ha was the other in double figures with 11 to her name the win at the BBA Court in Batu Bersurat.

On the other side, Raine Wong topscored for Minimau with 15 points in a losing effort.

It was an evenly contested opening frame.

Golden Girls got ahead by as many as seven points but a mid-range jumper late on by Kiwie Chua cut the deficit to 13-11 going into the second period.

Minimau scored six unanswered points before Tan hit a trey to stop the rot.

It remained a one-point game midway through the stanza before Golden Girls pulled Way for good.

They got the ball to Tong as she had her way in the paint to score.

It sparked a 10-0 run to see the gap extend to 30-19 at halftime.

Golden Girls dominated the match after the interval as the lead ballooned to over 20 points in the third quarter.

Minimau simply ran out of steam and couldn't hit a single field goal in the final period.

Meanwhile, the BBA also paid tribute to Hong Moi Leng for making the competition happen.

"Kudos to Hong Moi Leng for organising this tournament. Women Basketball in Brunei is still here because of her dedication and persistence," said a BBA spokesperson.

"Also glad to see a lot of women who were once active players come out to play again.

"And many thanks to Propel for sponsoring this tournament," he concluded.
